It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

A carpet is a showpiece of any interior. It makes a room elegant and cosy. Its task is to protect the floor and complete the room’s decor

Carpets can change interiors beyond recognition. When properly selected, they add unique character and pleasant atmosphere to the whole arrangement. A black carpet works well in a room decorated in glamour style

In contrast, a white carpet is a proposal for people who love bright and spacious rooms decorated in a minimalist and Scandinavian style. Regardless of the color and type, every carpet loses its shine and freshness after some time. It is worth knowing how to take care of it properly in order to keep it in perfect condition for as long as possible

How to start cleaning carpets?

Carpets should be vacuumed regularly with a brush designed for carpets. This is especially important for carpets with long pile, as dirt, dust and debris can penetrate the carpet very deeply

A good solution is to shake the carpet out. This is the best way to remove all the dirt. Taking care of your carpet regularly by vacuuming makes a big difference in washing it later

Remember, it is not just enough to vacuum it, it is important to give it a good wash at least once a year. It is also very important to react quickly when a stain appears. Thanks to immediate action, it is easier to get rid of it.

How to dry clean a carpet using home methods?

One of the popular methods of carpet cleaning is dry cleaning using loose products. The first of these is by using baking soda. This is the most well-known method not only because of its effectiveness, but also because of the availability of products. In addition to removing dirt, it can eliminate unpleasant odors

To do this, using a clean cloth, carefully apply baking soda to the carpet and leave the rubbed powder for a few hours. Then vacuum it thoroughly. Soda removes wine stains and even grease stains very well

Another way is to use soap flakes and potato flour. Grate the soap on fine mesh and 5 tablespoons of flakes mix well with 2 cups of potato flour

Spread this mixture on the carpet, rub it gently into the carpet and leave it for 30 minutes. After this time, vacuum the carpet thoroughly. These are simple ways to freshen up your carpet and they have a good effect

How to wet clean a carpet with home methods?

You will also need baking soda if you want to wet clean your carpet. Combine one teaspoon of baking soda with 1 cup of warm water and add 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and 1 teaspoon of vinegar, which is able to quickly dissolve the dirt. It is best to spray the liquid on the carpet using a container with a dispenser, thanks to which you can spread it thoroughly

Then, using a sponge or an old curtain, rub it well to remove the dirt

Vinegar is very good for discoloring stains caused by juice, paint, wine or coffee. Just mix together half a liter of water, a glass of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Spread this solution all over the carpet with a sponge and let it dry, then vacuum

What to do when home remedies fail?

When you’ve tried all the home remedies and none of them work, turn to the chemical products found in stores. There is a wide range of them; from liquids to foams. However, it is worth remembering that these are strongly acting substances

Before you apply them to the whole stain, make sure what effect you will get on a small piece of carpet; whether the structure of the pile will not change and whether discoloration will not appear. If there is discoloration, you can add a tablespoon of vinegar or citric acid to the product to neutralize the chlorine in them.
