Taking care of a garden is a very time-consuming activity. If you don’t have time to care for plants but would like to have a beautiful garden, choose flowers that are easy to grow. A combination of low-maintenance perennials and ornamental shrubs will make a beautiful garden.

8 easy-care perennials

1. Purple coneflower

Purple coneflower is a very popular bedding plant. It grows to a height of around 100 cm in flower clusters. The flowers have the characteristic form of an upturned basket. Varieties of this flower differ only in the color of inflorescences. It blooms throughout the summer, until the first frosts.

It is a perennial flower that requires almost no care. It grows in every type of soil. It grows best in moist soil. It needs a sunny or slightly shaded position.

2. Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia is another very popular bedding perennial. It blooms from summer to late autumn. The most popular species in Poland are:

  • rudbeckia brilliant,
  • shiny rudbeckia,
  • rudbeckia naga.

Rudbeckia has yellow inflorescences. The varieties vary in flower height. This plant is very easy to grow but requires a sunny position and moderate soil.

3. Show Hearts

The heartwort is a long-lived perennial that forms clumps of feathery ornamental foliage from which stems with bell-shaped inflorescences grow. This plant comes in a variety of colors. It blooms from May to the end of June. It prefers shady and semi-shaded positions, the soil must be constantly moist. This plant grows best near water bodies.

4. Carpathian bellflower

Carpathian bluebell is a naturally occurring plant in the Carpathians. It grows up to a maximum height of 30 cm. It needs a sunny or slightly shaded position. It grows best in alkaline and moderately moist soils.

5. Clary sage

Clary sage is a perennial plant, which grows up to 80 cm high. It grows in clumps. It blooms in June and July and requires a sunny location as well as dry and slightly moist soil.

6. Periwinkle

Periwinkle is a poisonous plant, but it does not require much care. It grows very fast, forming a green carpet with blue flowers. It grows on any location: sunny, partial shade and shady.

7. Sedum

Sedum is a plant that doesn’t have any requirements. It grows in any type of soil and needs a sunny and dry location. It blooms in July but there are varieties that also bloom in late fall.

8. Damask cumin

Damask nigella belongs to the genus of buttercup flowers and grows to a maximum height of 50 cm. It blooms throughout the summer. Depending on the variety, the flowers bloom in one of three colors: blue, white or pink. Although easy in cultivation, it doesn’t smell nice.

5 undemanding shrubs

1. Lilac

Lilac (commonly known as lilac) is a shrub that is great for home gardens. It grows quickly sideways. To avoid this, cut back the branches after the flowers have flowered.

2. Boxwood

Boxwood is a shrub that grows very slowly and usually reaches a height of 1 meter. The plant stays green all year round. The boxwood can be shaped in any way you like, so it can be a very interesting decoration in any garden.

3. Three-lobed almond

The three-lobed almond, also called almond tree, has the form of a tree or shrub (they are more resistant to frost than trees). It requires a sheltered and sunny position. It prefers moist and fertile soil.

4. Azalea

Azalea blooms in late April and early May. It starts to develop leaves after blooming. It requires acidic soil and a sheltered or partial shaded position. The least demanding are varieties which lose their leaves in autumn. Wintergreen varieties are more demanding.

5. Ryegrass

The ryegrass is very popular because it is frost hardy and resistant to lack of water. It blooms in the end of May and the beginning of June. It needs sunny or partial shade
