Avocados from seed – how to plant?
It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

Avocados are naturally found in tropical climates. The trees on which it grows can reach up to 20 meters in height and are evergreen. However, anyone can grow their own little plant at home

Any person who loves the taste of avocados will surely admit that more than once they have wondered how to plant this unique fruit. If you love plants in your home and would like to have your own avocado on your kitchen windowsill, then read our guide! You will learn step by step how to grow this exotic tree from a seed

Where to get the seed to plant an avocado?

You will of course find it in a ripe and healthy fruit. Avocados can already be purchased in most grocery stores. But first, you need to follow a few steps to see if the seed will be suitable for planting. First, cut the fruit in half. When taking the seed out of the avocado, make sure you do it gently so you don’t accidentally damage it. To do this, carefully twist the avocado halves in opposite directions. Once the seed remains in one of them, lever it up with a spoon and remove it.

Planting avocados – step by step

Now that you have the right seed, it’s time to plant! You should know that avocados planted in a pot grow very quickly and can be a great window sill decoration. To plant an avocado you need a few things

  • 4 toothpicks,
  • a jar filled with water,
  • compost soil,
  • manure,
  • a pot,
  • gravel.

    1. To begin, clean the seed thoroughly from the pulp and dry it slightly with a dry towel or clean cloth. At the bottom, insert two toothpicks. Place one on the right side and one on the left – do this parallel to the surface on which the seed is lying.

    2. Once the toothpicks are properly supporting the seed, gently lean them against the walls of the jar with the previously prepared water. The flat part of the seed should dip into the water about ⅓ the height of the avocado seed. The sharp side should stick out slightly beyond the jar. If you have done everything correctly, the seed should begin to sprout after about 2-4 weeks.

    3. The plant starts to sprout after a few weeks, but sometimes you have to wait much longer for the results. Once your avocado has sprouted roots and a small stem has grown from the seed, this means that you can repot the plant into a pot.

How do I properly transplant an avocado into a pot?

When your plant reaches a height of about 15 cm, this means that it needs to be repotted into a larger pot. When choosing a pot you can go crazy! Find one that you like and that matches your interior. Once you’ve chosen the right one, spread some gravel as a drainage layer in the bottom, then place your avocado in there

Apply soil mixed with a few tablespoons of manure. Make sure that the stem sticks out above the soil. Finally, water your plant, but make sure not to overwater it.

When can you expect the fruit?

If your avocado is grown in the right conditions, the plant can bear fruit after about 4-6 years. This is a very long time, so keep this in mind if you want to decide to grow this plant.
Additionally, avocado fruits take quite a long time to ripen – from 6 to 8 months. So, keep in mind that this plant is more demanding than most of the specimens that we already grow at our homes. However, if you are a fan of it and have enough patience – it is worth a try!
